For the past three years, my daughter and I have taken bi-weekly, three-hour road trips to visit family. When she was a baby, I’d time our drives with her naps, sneaking in some much-needed quiet time (and catching up on Las Culturistas). But then came the toddler era — and with it, an endless stream of questions, demands and the Frozen soundtrack on repeat. After one particularly headache-inducing ride, I went on the hunt for a toddler travel toy that might restore some peace. It didn’t take long to find the one: a $24 activity book that quickly became our road trip MVP. Honestly, it’s worth way more than that. Here’s why.

More Than 20 Activities

This isn’t the activity book you remember from childhood, filled with basic coloring pages and half-hearted letter tracing. This five-page wonder packs in around 26 activities, each designed to target different areas of toddler development. There are matching games that help little ones recognize letters, numbers and colors, plus a weather chart for any budding meteorologists.

But my personal favorite — the one that keeps my almost-3-year-old occupied the longest — is the dress-up page. No, it doesn’t involve tiny paper outfits. Instead, it features 13 real-life dressing challenges, like zipping a zipper, tying a shoelace and buckling a belt. Each task is tricky enough to keep kids engaged but practical enough to teach essential life skills. Case in point: my daughter can now zip her jacket and button her sweaters without my help, buying me a few precious minutes every morning.

No Adult Assistance Required

My husband usually stays behind on these trips, so finding an activity my daughter could handle solo was non-negotiable. (I refuse to pull over every 15 minutes to adjust the volume or unstick a button.) While an adult could help with some of the tasks, it’s totally unnecessary. In fact, it’s probably better if you don’t — let them struggle a little and actually learn.

And on the rare occasion my daughter insists something is “not working,” she just shrugs and moves on to an easier task. Crisis averted.

Easy to Pack

Since we travel so often, I keep this book tucked in the back pocket of the passenger seat. It never gets left behind, and my daughter can easily grab it from her car seat. That said, it’s also made its way into my diaper bag for restaurant outings and takes up almost no space.

Slightly larger but way lighter than a tablet, this activity book fits perfectly in a carry-on, making it a lifesaver for in-flight entertainment.

Soft, Safe Material

One of my favorite things about this book is that it provides the same entertainment as a busy board but in a much safer package. Traditional busy boards, with their tiny components, are often made of wood or plastic — great for at-home play, but a nightmare for travel. Small pieces can dislodge and become choking hazards, and hard materials could break in a crash, causing injuries.

This book, on the other hand, is made of soft felt with zero literal hardware. Any loose components are also felt and stick to the pages with Velcro, keeping everything contained. (Full disclosure: The Velcro has worn down over time, but it was an easy fix.)

One quick but important PSA: If you’re on the hunt for car ride entertainment, steer clear of any toy that attaches to a car seat. Aftermarket car seat accessories haven’t been crash-tested with your seat, so they could interfere with its safety — definitely not worth the risk.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a screen-free travel toy for your toddler, this Amazon activity book is it. Despite its compact size, it’s packed with engaging activities that keep 2- to 5-year-olds entertained and learning — all without needing constant help from you.

Whether you’ve got a tiny travel bug or just need a go-to distraction for dinners out, this $24 gem is worth way more than its surprisingly low price tag.
