Q: What are the most common signs of labor?
A: Every birth is different. But these signs could indicate that labor is near.
Stage 1: Pre-labor
These symptoms could start a month before labor.
- Baby "drops" into the pelvis
May be 2-4 weeks before delivery for first-time moms.
Could happen later for second-time moms. - Cervix dilates
The cervix opens and thins out.
This happens at a different pace for everyone. - Cramps and back pain
Your muscles are stretching in preparation for labor. - Joints feel looser
The hormone relaxin is helping your joints open up. - Diarrhea
All your muscles are relaxing - including in your rectum. - You stop gaining weight
Some moms even lose a little weight before going into labor. - Fatigue
You may feel extra tired or have the urge to "nest"
Stage 2: Early labor
These usually occur in the days or hours before labor
- Vaginal discharge changes
Increased discharge that's thicker or pinkish - Stronger, more frequent contractions
Likely the real thing if they:
• Don't ease up
• Don't go away when you change positions
• Become more painful or fall into a pattern - Water breaks
Usually happens after labor starts.
Could be a big gush, or more like a trickle.
Call your doctor or midwife right away if you experience:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Sudden or severe swelling in your face, hands or fingers
- A severe headache
- Pain or cramping in your lower abdomen
- Painful urination
- Chills or fever
- Vomiting or nausea
- Dizziness or blurred vision
- A sudden decrease in baby's movement
