No one gets out of pregnancy without a few aches and pains. When I was pregnant with Olivia, mine came in the form of super swollen and tender feet. As a fairly active person — not to mention the owner of a very energetic dog — I had a hard time avoiding long periods of standing and needed a shoe that would provide plenty of support. I already owned these shoes and wore them a fair amount pre-pregnancy, but they quickly became the only shoes I wore during pregnancy. And now, as I await the arrival of Baby #2 while chasing a 3.5-year-old, they’re back in heavy rotation.
There are plenty of comfortable, supportive, slip-on shoes — and many are more affordable than these Allbirds picks. But Allbirds Tree Loungers will forever be my go-to pregnancy shoes. Here's why:
Plenty of Stretch (and Support)
Knitted from eucalyptus tree fiber, the shoes are incredibly stretchy. As my feet swelled throughout the day, the shoes expanded with them, never feeling too tight. The material is also super lightweight, allowing my feet to breathe — which helped keep my athlete’s foot at bay. (Yeah, my feet are kind of the worst.)
Despite their lightness and flexibility, the Tree Loungers offered plenty of support thanks to the brand’s specialty foam. I have flat feet and usually need to add insoles to minimize aches and pains, but the Tree Loungers provided comfort right out of the box — no additions needed. A truly pleasant surprise.
Convenient Slip-On and -Off Style
One feature that makes Tree Loungers perfect for pregnancy: no laces. As anyone who’s been pregnant knows, bending over to tie shoes becomes a near-impossible task as your belly grows. I could slip into these as easily as I could my Birkenstocks, while other so-called “slip-ons” still required awkward maneuvering. And because Allbirds are designed to be worn without socks, that was one less thing to worry about.
Easy to Clean
Between outdoor play with my pup and frequent barefoot wear, my shoes weren’t always the cleanest. Fortunately, Allbirds can be tossed in the washing machine for a quick refresh. Just remove the insole and use cold water to help them keep their shape and size.
Can Be Worn Anywhere
Would I wear these to a wedding or a formal night out? No. But thanks to their neutral tones and simple silhouette, they pair well with jeans, leggings, and even casual dresses or skirts. I never had to switch shoes between errands, grabbing lunch with a friend, or taking the dog for a walk.
Perfect Postpartum
It’s been three years, and my Allbirds Tree Loungers are still in rotation — though I’m now on a second pair. Especially over the past nine months: As my belly grows and I try to leave the house with Olivia, I’m extra grateful I can slip them on without bending over or using my hands (which are usually full of Olivia’s “necessities”). And since they can be squished flat in a suitcase without losing their shape, I’m definitely packing them in my hospital bag.
